Week 1

A BEAUTIFUL MIND

-Watch the movie at home.

A Brief Note on Princeton and MIT:

Most of the film centers around John’s life at two of the best Universities in the United States. Princeton is located in the small town of Princeton, New Jersey, about an hour from New York City. When John arrived as a young student in the late 1940’s, Albert Einstein was still a professor there (he died in 1955, having been at Princeton for nearly 20 years).

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, known by most as MIT, is perhaps the most prestigious school of technology and applied sciences in the world (in the film, John taught for a few years at a defense department center at MIT called the Wheeler Institute). MIT is located just minutes from Harvard University, in Boston, Massachusetts, which probably has more excellent universities than any city in the world. (source: http://www.english-trailer.com/)

  1. Hi, Cláudia.

This was also a good post and should provide additional background information.

When I first read the post, I thought to myself, "But how does this help students work with "A Beautiful Mind" in class?" Then I realized that (of course) the students already knew what they would do in class because they had already discussed other films.

I think it was a good idea to direct students to the FAQ before asking them to see the trailer.

    Fascinating!

  2. Claudia,

I'm already a fan of this blog! I'm sure you will keep finding creative ways to use this space for learning and sharing with cinephiles worldwide.
The film you chose is a fantastic one with a brilliant cast. Thanks for creating this space that will only add value to what you do in your classroom.

By the way, did you know that Luiz Claudio, one of our participants here, teaches a course called Movie Talk? I'm sure you could even ask him to be a guest here.

  3. Dear Carla and Dennis,

Thanks for your help and encouragement.
It is important to point out that the blog work is presently substituting the activities previously proposed by e-mail. There is extensive vocab expansion practice and discussion (the two major focuses of he course while listening) in class. There is a more detailed description on how the course works on my Posterous.
The goal is to include more Web activities gradually and bring students around to participate.
Carla, I will contact Luiz Claudio and ask for tips.
    Super hug!
